![]() ![]() I went the hard headed way and pushed myself through modern endgame as a DD with Samurai and Geomancer when I really needed to contribute. #Final fantasy xiv online races freeThen I found out a friend IRL used to play so we got together and I got more stuff unlocked but quit again.įast forward to December 2020 and I decided to log in for the free return weekend.I've been playing regularly ever since and it's been the best gaming experience I've had in a long time. I got super burned out and left for a while. I got really addicted and got through RoV up to the point where you unlock Omen. So I was a late bloomer and didn't start playing FFXI until around 2016 or so. ![]() Just countless things like that really made it a unique experience. FFXI always found a way to have this happen in the middle of a pack of monsters. Pray you don't get aggro'd or your party might have a hell of a time rescuing you. Now you have to suddenly try and find a tiny safe aclove to put it back up. You're running through a dark, winding labyrinth and you get the warning. Using Sneak/Invis through dungeons with high level mobs was such a harrowing, heart-pumping experience. It had to adapt.ĭeath was such an omnipresent threat in those days. Definitely a product of its time that I can't see people nowadays tolerating much. I think my brain kinda filtered out much of those exhausting memories, though. It was definitely super fucking tedious at times, especially waiting for a party and then partying for hours to get what was honestly a pittance of exp that you could just as easily lose in an ill-fated excursion somewhere. Coming across anything higher than Easy Prey for a lot of jobs was basically a death sentence. After a certain level, you couldn't scratch your own ass without a tank and a healer. I still remember even trivial little events from nearly two decades ago.īut DAMN was early FFXI brutal. ![]() I took hundreds of photos across the years I really should find those and go nostalgia diving. Truly had some magical moments that can't be replicated. I played FFXI from 2004 to 2017 and I still think about it often. But I know nothing else will ever be like FFXI. I'm still holding out for Pantheon scratching that old school MMO itch. I remember one party I was in being in awe when I damn well nearly killed an enemy in a single hit. I also remember doing War/Thf in Crawler's Nest and just obliterating enemies with Sneak Attack + Sturmwind. Every single person who joined the group was skeptical as hell but as soon as they saw the damage and how well I was tanking they shut up lol. One particular job combo I remember having a blast with was Nin/Rng with a gun in Garlaige Citadel. So of my favorite moments in FFXI was just trying crazy shit and seeing what worked. The community was really good, but by this point the meta was down to a science and the sense of discovery I remember so well was just gone. but a game being frozen in time like that is no good either. I really enjoyed my time and it definitely scratched that the itch. The second way I tried was via unofficial servers. All the new systems layered on top of each other just feel clunky as hell to boot. EXP and items are just handed to you without much effort and many of the rites of passage I remember so well are just meaningless (subjob quest, limit break quest, first run to Jeuno, AF armor pieces, first time getting to Sky, etc ,etc). Everything that made the game memorable is just gone in the modern era. The official way just felt like such an empty experience. ![]() I tried to get back into FFXI a couple of different ways a few years ago. I thought Playonline was just the coolest thing ever haha. It was one of my first ventures into online gaming. #Final fantasy xiv online races ps2I will never forget the day I got the PS2 HDD, modem and FFXI. ![]()
